Abigail Lazkoz Brings Escultura Pública to Espacio Marzana in Bilbao
Contemporary art enthusiasts visiting the Bilbao Estuary area have a new reason to explore local gallery spaces as Espacio Marzana hosts its second solo exhibition by artist Abigail Lazkoz. Titled Escultura Pública, the showcase invites visitors to engage with a thought-provoking installation that examines the complex relationships connecting human presence, the natural world, and built artifacts.
Exploring the Exhibition Experience in Bilbao
For this special presentation, the artist has transformed the gallery environment into an unconventional sculpture park. Viewers navigating the space encounter a series of constructed interventions where the surrounding landscape is modified by human activity. The works feature a diverse assortment of structures—ranging from ramps and semi-ruined forms to abstract and utilitarian shapes—that collectively create a stimulating, ramshackle garden of architectural follies designed to surprise the observer.
This body of work expands upon thematic territories Lazkoz first explored in her 2007 installation 130.000 años de Ultimas Tendencias, which was part of the Chacun A Son Gout exhibition at the nearby Guggenheim Bilbao Museoa. Through this new project, the artist delves deeper into conceptual notions surrounding monuments, collective memory, physical ruins, contingency, and permanence.
About the Artist
Abigail Lazkoz has maintained an active exhibition profile since 2000, presenting her work in numerous solo and group settings across national and international institutions. Her creative output is represented in the permanent collections of prominent contemporary art centers, including The Drawing Center and PS1-MoMA in New York, MUSAC in León, ARTIUM in Vitoria-Gasteiz, and local cultural landmarks such as the Guggenheim Bilbao Museoa and Sala Rekalde.
