Understanding the Photographic Work
The exhibition centers around a photographic series captured by the artistic collective Democracia at the Civil Cemetery of La Almudena in Madrid. This specific burial ground forms part of the city's broader Eastern Necropolis. Historically rooted in a royal decree from April 1883, civil cemeteries were established adjacent to Catholic grounds with independent access to accommodate individuals outside the Catholic faith.
For this project, the collective documented a space holding significant historical weight, where numerous egalitarian and revolutionary aspirations of Spanish society rest. The resulting images incorporate gravestone inscriptions and ideological symbols, exploring how utopian ideals intersect with modern society.
About the Artists
Democracia is an artistic collective established in Madrid by Iván López and Pablo España. Their practice extends across exhibitions, publishing initiatives, and curatorial projects. Prior to forming Democracia, the founders were key members of the collective El Perro. Their ongoing work examines social structures, political discourse, and public space through various mediums.
