Visitors heading to Espacio Marzana can experience Immaculated Dreams, a project centered on video and drawing that investigates the chaotic states of the mind, dreams, lethargy, myths, and the blurred boundaries between reality, fiction, and the subconscious. The works examine how these psychological realms shape human behavior, using the central concept of creating "animated sleep portraits."
These portraits draw inspiration from real individuals, portraying them not as they appear in waking life, but as they perceive themselves within their own dreams. Participants share their dream experiences by staging them and fictionalizing themselves for the camera and paper, offering viewers an intimate glimpse into private desires, fears, and internal landscapes. By decoding symbols unique to the dream world, the project transforms obscure or unsettling passages into luminous moments through the act of staging.
What to Expect from the Exhibition
The presentation at the contemporary art gallery alongside the Bilbao Estuary features the traditional animation video SnakeBoy, in which the central figure acts out a recurring dream in a continuous loop. Dressed as a cowboy, the protagonist rides a snake in a playful exploration of power, control, and uninhibited sexuality.
Alongside the video, the exhibition includes small- and large-format drawings depicting specific moments from various dream universes. These subjects float in the emptiness of sleep, disconnected from a fixed environment, highlighting only the actions that define their internal narratives. The imagery touches on a wide range of sensory themes, including supernatural abilities like flight and telekinesis, anthropomorphism, psychological tension, fear of the unknown, and surreal transformations.
