Exhibition summary
This retrospective exhibition honors the eccentric and wayward Antwerp modernist Paul Joostens, following a generous 2023 donation of 214 works. Visitors can explore his unique visual universe, which blends subversive Dadaist influences with a nostalgic, gothic-inspired aesthetic.
Curatorial context
Paul Joostens stands out among Antwerp’s modernist artists for his wayward, eccentric, and deeply idiosyncratic approach. Eschewing the dominant modernist aesthetic of his time, Joostens forged a highly personal and artificial visual universe that often feels dark, unconventional, and provocative. His early career saw him move through Post-Impressionism and Cubo-Futurism, but he ultimately sought to move beyond mere imitation, creating works that combined the subversive spirit of Dada with a spiritual, medieval Gothic sensitivity.
Following a significant 2023 donation of 214 artworks from Galerie Ronny van de Velde, this exhibition provides an incisive retrospective of his diverse oeuvre. The display intermingles paintings, drawings, collages, and assemblages to showcase Joostens as an 'artist's artist.' While his work is often considered challenging by the general public, he has long been held in high regard by fellow Flemish intellectuals and creators, including Hugo Claus, Van Breedam, and Kamagurka, for his refusal to conform to conventional aesthetic expectations.
