Celebrating Emerging Talents: El Gran Grito at Kunsthaus Baselland
Kunsthaus Baselland hosts its eighth collaborative graduation showcase, El Gran Grito, presenting the final projects of nearly 50 bachelor’s and master’s degree candidates from the Institute Art Gender Nature at the Basel Academy of Art and Design FHNW.
Marking a bittersweet milestone, this year’s presentation serves as a final farewell to the current venue before the institution moves to its new building at Dreispitz, right next door to the HGK Basel FHNW campus. Visitors exploring the contemporary-art institution can experience a diverse array of new commissions, performances, and installations from a new generation of creators.
Exploring the 2023 Graduation Showcase in Basel
Co-curated by Institute head Chus Martínez alongside the Barcelona-based collective El Palomar—founded in 2013 by artists Mariokissme and R. Marcos Mota—the exhibition centers on themes of equality, diversity, and queer art histories. Rather than following a strict single theme, the works flow continuously through the space, featuring mediums ranging from moving image and performance to sculpture, painting, and digital animation.
For visitors navigating the local cultural scene in Basel, the showcase offers an intimate look at how emerging practitioners address contemporary social realities, collective memory, and self-determination. The participating artists include Ester Alemayehu Hatle, Florent Bonzon, Paloma Bosquê, Pat Homse, Gilles Jacot, La-Im Kim, Patrick Ostrowsky, Jodok Wehrli, and dozens of other developing voices.
