Step out! Regionale 20 Celebrates Two Decades at Kunsthaus Baselland
Marking the twentieth anniversary of the cross-border exhibition format, Kunsthaus Baselland serves as one of the core founding institutions for Regionale 20. Titled Step out!, the presentation brings together fourteen distinct artistic positions, inviting visitors to experience works that stretch dynamically from two-dimensional surfaces into three-dimensional spaces.
Exploring Sculptural Positions Across the Gallery
The exhibition highlights regional and international creators who engage directly with the architecture of the institution. Among the featured installations is a monumental and long-awaited wall piece by Reinach-based artist Dadi Wirz. Originally conceived in 1990 as an art-in-architecture proposal for Pratteln, the Wandskulptur Baselbieter Gemeinden has finally been realized on an eight-by-five-meter wall. Comprising dozens of rotatable brass silhouettes representing the municipalities of Basel-Landschaft, the work functions as both a playful map and a fluid statement on togetherness.
Other participants push the boundaries of materials and space in diverse ways. Kilian Rüthemann pairs a video projection of a stone surrounded by water with footage of ritualistic crowds touching sacred architecture, creating a dialogue between the mundane and the monumental. Meanwhile, Katrin Hotz utilizes manipulated paper panels in bright sulfur yellow to warp and define room corners, and Simone Holliger builds freestanding, paper-based sculptures that react sensitively to gravity and room equilibrium.
Jürg Stäuble contributes a reflective floor piece featuring triangular mirror shards that places passing visitors directly into the optical crosshairs of the installation. Laura Mietrup merges varied elements such as wood, acrylic glass, and chrome steel into a fictitious yet communicative alphabet, while Selina Baumann exhibits a series of raw clay figures alongside stacked plant pots. Additional spatial interventions by Gin Bahc, Franziska Furter, Kaspar Ludwig, Maude Léonard-Contant, Julia Steiner, Sanna Reitz, Urs Cavelti, and Jorinde Fischer complete the expansive layout.
