Explore the Wild Boar and Lettuce Ceramics Exhibition in Basel

This permanent exhibition highlights the exquisite 18th-century faience ceramics produced by the Strasbourg-based Hannong family manufactory. Visitors can explore fascinating sculptural terrines in the shapes of animals and fruits, alongside high-quality tableware that once graced the tables of Basel's elite households.

These ceramic works, crafted by the renowned Hannong family, represent some of the most celebrated treasures within the collection of the Historical Museum Basel. The exhibition, located on the ground floor of the Haus zum Kirschgarten, features remarkably detailed terrines shaped like fruits and animals, as well as refined tableware decorated with superior-quality painting. Throughout the 18th century, Basel's prosperity drove a high demand for imported luxury goods, as the city lacked its own porcelain production. Strasbourg faience became the preferred choice for the local aristocracy, evidenced by family coats of arms found on many of the plates and salvers. In addition to dining wares, the exhibition also showcases magnificent tile stoves, illustrating the significant cultural and commercial influence of Strasbourg's artistic output on Basel's domestic life from 1721 until the factory's closure in 1781.
