Traces of Care and Coercion: A Social History Exhibition in Riehen

This exhibition explores the history of administrative coercive measures in Riehen, shedding light on the fates of individuals affected by state intervention. It seeks to fill gaps in the local history by examining the victims, the authorities responsible, and the institutions involved.

For many decades in Switzerland, administrative coercive measures were used as tools for poverty alleviation and social control. Often without court orders, children and adolescents were separated from their families and placed in foster care, frequently forced to work as indentured laborers. Adults who did not conform to societal norms were institutionalized in labor schools or psychiatric clinics. The exhibition at MUKS focuses on these biographical histories, aiming to uncover the traces of this often overlooked chapter of Riehen's past. By posing critical questions about the responsible authorities and the institutions involved, the museum attempts to systematically address the missing parts of the local history. This satellite exhibition was developed as a complement to the touring exhibition 'I Have Simply Been No One,' which focuses on care and coercion across Switzerland. Through this research-based project, the museum invites the public to engage with a difficult but essential aspect of regional and national history.
