This exhibition brings together two artists from different generations, Meuser and Noemi Pfister, to explore the question of art's social and personal relevance. Through a contrast of sculptural steel objects and humorous small-format paintings, the show examines the artist's role in a world in turmoil.
The exhibition title, 'Where do you stand with your art, colleague?' (Wo stehst du mit deiner Kunst, Kolleg?), originates from a 1973 work by Jörg Immendorff. It poses a fundamental dilemma: can an artist's studio practice maintain relevance when the outside world is in constant unrest? Noemi Pfister addresses this question with a series of small-format paintings featuring iconic childhood figures like Krtek and Pumuckl. These characters are depicted navigating the art world as collectors, artists, and visitors, offering a humorous, keyhole view into the mechanisms of art-making and the setting of cultural standards. Meuser, a former student of Joseph Beuys, approaches the same question from a pragmatic perspective. His work uses found scrap metal and industrial objects to move away from the pathos of traditional art-making. By transforming these forgotten materials into sculptures with their own life, Meuser creates art that is grounded, laconic, and uncompromising. Presented together in Basel for the first time, these two artists offer mirror images of the same question: one looking outwardly at the art world's mechanics, and the other looking inwardly at the essence of practice and material.
