Exhibition summary

This exhibition by Katja Aufleger explores the concept of the siren through themes of seduction and sound, featuring video works and unique installations. The artist draws connections between the alluring nature of fishing lures and the 'singing' dunes of the Qatari desert.

Curatorial context

In her exhibition 'Sirenen' (Sirens), artist Katja Aufleger investigates the tension between seductive artificiality and natural phenomena. The exhibition centers on two major projects: 'The Glow' and 'Al Wakra'. 'The Glow' is a video installation that remixes internet tutorials for fishing lures, framing these synthetic devices as modern-day sirens that promise an ideal, optimized reality designed to manipulate and entice the viewer, much like the mythological creatures of old. Contrasting this, the 'Al Wakra' project documents the artist's exploration of singing sand dunes in Qatar. Inspired by historical accounts of dunes leading travelers astray with their haunting sounds, Aufleger incorporates sand from these dunes to create a series of unique glass organ pipes. These instruments serve as both a physical manifestation of the desert landscape and as functional musical tools, bridging the gap between natural geological matter and constructed artistic form. Through photography and audio, the exhibition maps these disparate 'siren' narratives, presenting them as a cohesive meditation on how we are drawn to both the artificial and the sublime.
