Exhibition summary

This exhibition brings together four significant works by the Filipino artist Juan Luna y Novicio created during his 1893 stay in Portugalete. The paintings offer a profound insight into the industrial evolution and social changes occurring in Bizkaia at the end of the 19th century.

Curatorial context

In 1893, the Filipino artist Juan Luna y Novicio settled in Portugalete at the invitation of the industrial entrepreneur Víctor Chávarri. During this time, he produced four exceptional works that are now gathered at the Rialia Industry Museum: 'Obreros en el taller de convertidores de acero Robert de La Vizcaya' (Workers in the Robert steel converter workshop), 'Era de panes en Horno Alto' (Bread threshing at the Blast Furnace), 'Los ferrones' (The ironworkers), and 'Mercado en Portugalete' (Market in Portugalete). These paintings serve as a unique testimonial to the rapid industrial transformation and the shifting social dynamics of Bizkaia during that era, captured through the eyes and subjects of the artist. The exhibition has been curated in collaboration with the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum to provide a cohesive view of this historical period.
