In 'Es lo que hay' (It is what it is), photographer Jorge Isla presents a critical reflection on the nature of images, their production, and their consumption in contemporary society. The exhibition contrasts the cinematic 'white square'—referencing Hiroshi Sugimoto's long-exposure photographs of empty theaters—with the omnipresent 'black square' of the modern smartphone screen. While the former represents a poetic, concentrated form of storytelling and collective contemplation, the latter serves as a flat, ubiquitous interface that facilitates individual saturation and the rapid turnover of data. Isla’s practice centers on the physical destruction of the photographic device, smashing smartphones to foreground the materiality of the tools we use to navigate our world. By presenting these shattered, accumulated screens, the exhibition moves away from the allure of design and technology to address larger themes of resource scarcity, global capitalism, and the overwhelming volume of imagery that defines our digital existence.
