Handelsbeurs Antwerpen

In 1531, the new Antwerp stock exchange was inaugurated. Designed by architect Domien de Waghemakere, it served as a central trading hub featuring a rectangular open square enclosed by covered galleries and vaulted columns, establishing a model for future stock exchanges in cities like London, Rotterdam, and Amsterdam.

Following the fire of 1583 and the subsequent decline of commercial activity due to the Siege of Antwerp, the building transitioned to secondary functions. Between 1661 and 1810, the space served as an art academy and the seat of the Saint Luke Guild.

In 1853, the open-air courtyard of the exchange was covered by a pioneering glass and metal dome designed by Charles Marcellis. This structure was inspired by the design principles of the Crystal Palace in London.

Following a devastating fire in 1858, a design competition was held by the city. The current neo-Gothic structure was completed in 1872 by architect Joseph Schadde, notable for its innovative integration of historical design with modern metal roofing technology for the central interior.

The Antwerp stock exchange operation was officially abolished at the end of 1997, and its functions were transferred to the Brussels Stock Exchange. This event ended the building's centuries-long role as the primary financial center for the city.

In February 2016, archaeological excavations conducted before major renovations uncovered significant historical remains, including medieval wall structures, kiln remnants, and urns dating back to the Iron Age, prior to the installation of an underground parking facility.

Following a multi-year restoration project, the building was reopened in 2019 to function as a venue for events, congresses, and exhibitions. It was officially inaugurated by Mayor Bart De Wever on October 4, 2019.
