Graciela Iturbide: Eyes to Fly With Exhibition at FOMU Photo Museum

This major retrospective is the first in Belgium to showcase the extensive work of renowned Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide. The exhibition explores themes of identity, ritual, and the human condition through iconic black-and-white photography and rarely seen vintage prints.

Eyes to Fly With offers an in-depth look at the vision of Graciela Iturbide, exploring photography as an emancipatory tool for understanding both the self and the world. The exhibition examines how Iturbide captures the intersection of rituals, daily life, and cultural heritage, particularly through her sensitive portrayal of the Zapotec women in Oaxaca and the Seri people. By moving beyond traditional gender roles, her work provides a profound commentary on how communities adapt and evolve across time. Developed in close consultation with the artist, the exhibition presents approximately 160 works, ranging from well-known photographs to intimate, rarely exhibited series such as her documentation of Frida Kahlo’s bathroom and her photographic journeys in India and Bangladesh. The collection underscores Iturbide's masterful use of light and composition, offering visitors a unique insight into her career which spans more than fifty years.
