Exhibition summary

Kunsthal Extra City presents a reconstruction of Guillaume Bijl's unique 2002 project, which blends fictional history, theatrical scenery, and performance. This immersive installation explores the boundaries between fact and fiction through the only stage play in the artist's career, presented here alongside a museum-style exhibition.

Curatorial context

In Remembrance of the Earldom of Watou is a reconstruction of an exceptional project originally created by Guillaume Bijl for the Watou Arts Festival in 2002. Twenty-four years later, this work is presented within the unique architecture of the former Dominican church at Kunsthal Extra City. The installation is a multifaceted experience that merges a fictionalized historical museum with theatrical scenery, offering visitors a space where reality and imagination intersect. A central component of the exhibition is the performance of 'The Early Years of the Earldom of Watou,' the only stage play ever written by Bijl. For this presentation, the play is directed by artist Aline Bouvy and performed by a group of amateur actors from Antwerp. Marking the first presentation of the artist's work since his passing in 2025, the project serves as both a retrospective and a living installation, inviting audiences to critically reflect on the nature of history and storytelling.

Admission and ticket notes

Performance dates, reservations, and ticket information for the exhibition will be announced by the museum in the near future. Visitors are advised to check the official website for forthcoming details regarding access and booking requirements for the performances and gallery entry.
