Connecting Art, Economics, and Environmentalism
The publication builds on the insights highlighted in Dan McKanan’s 2018 study, Eco-Alchemy: Anthroposophy and the History and Future of Environmentalism, which examines how individuals influenced by anthroposophy contributed to major milestones in the modern environmental movement, community-supported agriculture, and benefit corporations.
By framing Goethe’s phenomenological natural science as an approach to aesthetic education, the book addresses contemporary challenges like ecological and economic alienation. It incorporates insights from the recent Springer Nature volume On the Earth We Want to Live while also directly addressing external critiques, including those from Peter Staudenmaier and social ecology perspectives.
Project Background and Timeline
The research originates from a dissertation exploring sustainable development and aesthetic education, shaped by coursework developed alongside colleagues at the Nature Institute in Ghent, New York. Following Williams' faculty appointment at the Goetheanum in 2023, the research evolved into this comprehensive manuscript.
A draft of the book is scheduled for completion in December 2025, paving the way for revisions, peer review, and eventual publication in the United States.
