OUT OF THE BOX Contemporary Art Exhibition and Museum Guide at Schaulager

Celebrating two decades since its opening, this exhibition explores Schaulager's core principle of making art accessible through its extensive collection. The show features a dynamic landscape of projection boxes housing complex time-based media works alongside paintings, sculptures, and installations from the Emanuel Hoffmann Foundation.

The title OUT OF THE BOX reflects the fundamental philosophy that has guided Schaulager since its inception in 2003: bringing art out of long-term storage and into public view for research, conservation, and appreciation. By liberating these pieces from their crates, the exhibition highlights the museum's role as a bridge between the collection and both the academic and general public. The exhibition is organized as a landscape of projection boxes, specially designed to accommodate the growing number of complex time-based media works acquired by the collection. Alongside these installations, visitors encounter a wide array of paintings, drawings, sculptures, and photographs from the Emanuel Hoffmann Foundation, many of which thematically engage with the concepts of containment and space. The exhibition invites public engagement with contemporary art, encouraging a contemplative approach to these works, particularly the more time-intensive media pieces.
