The Tacita Dean and Francis Alÿs Contemporary Art Exhibition at Schaulager

This exhibition presented the works of two distinct artists, featuring Tacita Dean's comprehensive 'Analogue' project alongside Francis Alÿs's 'Sign Painting Project'. The showcase explored themes of authorship, the nature of originals versus copies, and the poetic potential of film and traditional painting techniques.

In 2006, the Schaulager hosted a significant exhibition featuring two distinct but dialogic artistic projects: Tacita Dean's 'Analogue' and Francis Alÿs's 'Sign Painting Project'. Tacita Dean's presentation, titled 'Analogue: Films, Photographs, Drawings 1991–2006', served as an extensive survey of her work. Her films are noted for their poetic, non-linear narrative and specific focus on capturing the ephemeral nature of objects and light on analogue film, reflecting her ongoing exploration of subjects on the verge of disappearance. Contrasting this, the 'Sign Painting Project' by Francis Alÿs was an investigation into the intersections of authorship and reproduction. Conducted between 1993 and 1997 in collaboration with sign painters in Mexico City, the project involved Alÿs creating designs that were then enlarged and interpreted by commercial painters. By blurring the lines between original artwork and copy, the project invited viewers to consider questions of artistic practice and the collaborative process in a contemporary context.
