Exhibition summary

This exhibition explores the long-standing artistic career of Juanjo Fuentes, a key figure in Málaga's contemporary art scene since the 1990s. The show features a dialogue between his iconic animal-themed ceramic sculptures and a newly unveiled series of digital collages that examine collective memory and domestic objects.

Curatorial context

Juanjo Fuentes has been a cornerstone of the Málaga cultural landscape since the 1990s, evolving from early participation in critical collectives like the Agustín Parejo School to his current status as a visual storyteller. His work is characterized by the use of allegorical figures—often incorporating domestic objects and ceramic pieces—to explore shared identity and the collective memory of a generation. By recontextualizing items such as Lladró porcelain, he imbues the familiar with a new, sharper symbolic power that questions our contemporary environment. This exhibition also marks a significant shift in his technical practice by presenting his digital collage work to the public for the first time. Having developed this research in private for many years, Fuentes creates a conceptual dialogue within the gallery, pairing eighty framed digital pieces with thirty porcelain figures. This contrast highlights the artist's ability to maintain his signature narrative voice while experimenting with new media to bridge the gap between traditional materiality and modern digital expression.
