Hohensalzburg Fortress

Construction of the original fortress began in 1077 under Archbishop Gebhard von Helfenstein. The initial structure was a basic motte-and-bailey design with a wooden wall, created to protect the political interests of the Prince-Archbishops of Salzburg during the Investiture Controversy.

Significant defensive upgrades were carried out in 1462 under the direction of Prince-Archbishop Burkhard II von Weißpriach, who oversaw the construction of the ring walls and various defensive towers that defined the fortress's medieval profile.

The 'Salzburg Bull' (Salzburger Stier), a large mechanical aerophon containing over 200 pipes, was built in 1502 by Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach. It remains a historic feature housed in the Krautturm, serving to coordinate the timing of the Residenzplatz carillon.

Matthäus Lang von Wellenburg documented the operation of the Reisszug in 1515, a primitive funicular railway system designed to provide freight access to the fortress's upper courtyard. It is widely considered one of the oldest operational railways in the world.

The only recorded siege of the fortress occurred in 1525 during the German Peasants' War. A coalition of miners, farmers, and townspeople attempted to oust Prince-Archbishop Matthäus Lang, but the insurrection failed to capture the site.

Fearing potential Ottoman Turkish invasions, the fortress underwent major fortification work. External bastions were begun in the 16th century and finally completed during the 17th century, providing the defensive perimeter that survives today.

Following its use as a dungeon, storage depot, and barracks throughout the 19th century, the fortress was officially abandoned as a military outpost in 1861, marking the transition from an active fortification to a historical site.

To improve access for the growing number of visitors, the Festungsbahn funicular railway was constructed and opened to the public in 1892. The line ascends from the town below to the Hasengrabenbastei, effectively turning the fortress into a major tourist landmark.

The German artist Arno Lehmann, known for his work in ceramics and sculpture, used the fortress as his base of operations and living space from 1949 until his death in 1973, leaving a distinct mark on the site's modern cultural history.
