Star Carr Headdresses Exhibition of Mesolithic Archaeology at Yorkshire Museum

This exhibition spotlights 11,000-year-old deer frontlets from the Mesolithic site of Star Carr in North Yorkshire, including items never before displayed in public. Through collaborative research with the University of York, it explores the potential ceremonial uses of these headdresses and their cultural significance to early Mesolithic communities.

The Star Carr headdresses have captivated archaeologists and the public since their initial discovery in the 1950s. This spotlight exhibition brings together four unique deer frontlets—never before seen together in public—to offer fresh insights into the lives of the people who inhabited North Yorkshire 11,000 years ago. Drawing on recent research conducted by the University of York, the display investigates the enduring mystery of why these headdresses were crafted, considering theories ranging from ritual practice to disguise. In addition to the headdresses, the exhibition features a rare engraved shale pendant discovered at the Star Carr site in 2015. Recognized as the earliest known Mesolithic art in Britain, this delicate, subtriangular object provides a rare glimpse into the symbolic world of the Mesolithic era. The research team, comprising scholars from the Universities of York, Manchester, and Chester, suggests that the intricate, enigmatic markings on the pendant may represent anything from trees and maps to leaves or tally marks, further deepening our understanding of prehistoric life in Britain.
