Visiting The Shambles in York

Although not specifically named in the 1086 Domesday Book, the site is identified by an entry listing two butchers' stalls near St Crux church, which were owned by the Count of Mortain at the time.

The street, which historically held various names reflecting local trades, was documented as Haymongergate by the year 1240.

The street retains a significant amount of original medieval-built fabric, with the majority of the current timber-framed structures dating to the period between circa 1350 and 1475.

The street name was recorded as Nedlergate in 1394, a name thought to reference specific crafts and trades conducted within the area.

By 1426, the street had become widely known as the Great Flesh Shambles, a name that clearly reflected its long-standing primary function as a butchers' street.

A directory from 1885 recorded that thirty-one butchers' shops were actively located along the street at that time, though none remain operating today.

During the 1950s, the York City Council purchased numerous properties to perform extensive alterations and rebuilding. This period also saw the total demolition of Little Shambles, which was deemed beyond repair, and the removal of many historic rear slaughterhouses.

The adjacent market area, previously known as Newgate Market after its location, was officially renamed Shambles Market in 2015.

Reflecting its popularity and association with fantasy-themed tourism, four wizard-themed shops were established on the street beginning in 2017.
