Marc Bauer: Fear Rage Desire, Still Standing Exhibition in Basel

Swiss artist Marc Bauer presents a powerful multimedia installation that examines the history of masculinity, violence, and identity from a queer perspective. The project combines large-scale mural drawings, canvases, and sound installations to trace how systemic violence shapes society from the past to the present.

In this extensive project, Marc Bauer interrogates the construction of masculinity and the violence it often perpetuates against queer communities. By weaving together art-historical motifs—ranging from Hieronymus Bosch to Artemisia Gentileschi—with contemporary archival research and personal reflection, Bauer reveals how deep-seated power structures continue to manifest today. The installation, which unfolds across the museum's walls and includes suspended canvases, invites viewers to navigate an intimate and often melancholic path that addresses themes of desire, resistance, and self-empowerment. Technically versatile, the exhibition employs a range of drawing techniques from lithographic chalk to graphite, highlighting the material immediacy of the artistic process.
