Exhibition summary

Renée Levi presents 'Mira', a site-specific mural created for the small courtyard of the Kunstmuseum Basel's Hauptbau. This dynamic work transforms the museum's tranquil transitional space into an immersive wind tunnel of color and movement.

Curatorial context

The mural 'Mira' was created on-site by Renée Levi specifically for the small inner courtyard of the Kunstmuseum Basel's Hauptbau. Commissioned by museum director Elena Filipovic, the work serves to re-establish this space as a site for art while maintaining its character as a place of rest and contemplation for visitors. Levi, a prominent Swiss artist known for her interventions that blur the boundaries between painting and architecture, used spray paint to create the work in a single, spontaneous act of creation. The painting sweeps across three walls, defined only by a white frame along the floor and ceiling, turning the area into a metaphorical wind tunnel. Renée Levi's practice often challenges the medium of painting, reviving it through radical and precise interventions. 'Mira' is a donation from the artist, further strengthening her presence in the museum's collection. This intervention reflects her interest in the intersection of painting, drawing, and writing, bringing a feminist perspective to the museum's architecture. The mural is intended to remain in the courtyard until the upcoming renovation of the Hauptbau, offering visitors a sense of playful lightness and sensual force as they traverse the area between the museum shop and the information desk.
