Exhibition summary

This exhibition provides a comprehensive insight into the printmaking oeuvre of Vera Molnár, a pioneer of computer and media art. Featuring editions produced in collaboration with Basel's Atelier of Éditions FANAL, the display explores the artist's systematic investigation of geometric forms.

Curatorial context

Vera Molnár. Possibilities offers an in-depth look at the printmaking career of the Hungarian-born artist who became a visionary of computer-assisted geometry. Molnár, who spent much of her career in Paris, was captivated by the behavior of geometric forms—particularly the square—when subjected to slight, calculated variations. By using her self-described 'machine imaginaire' and later early computer technology, she systematically tested the boundaries of structure and instability in her compositions. The exhibition features 28 editions, including several multi-part series, produced at the Atelier of Éditions FANAL in Basel. These works range from rigorous geometric studies to pieces inspired by the artist's everyday observations, such as light patterns in her retirement home. The exhibition also highlights the deep connection between Molnár and the city of Basel, marked by a significant donation of prints to the Kupferstichkabinett Basel following the closure of the FANAL studio in 2025.
