Curatorial context
Pablo Picasso: Structures of Invention. The Unity of a Life’s Work offers a comprehensive reassessment of the artist’s legacy by dismantling conventional categorizations that often fragment his work into isolated periods like 'Cubism,' 'Classicisms,' or biographical phases. Curated by Michael FitzGerald, the exhibition proposes that Picasso’s extraordinary creativity was defined by a constant interplay between innovation and retrospection. By juxtaposing works from different decades, materials, and techniques—including painting, sculpture, ceramics, and graphic arts—the exhibition invites visitors to see Picasso’s oeuvre as a unified, coherent body of art rather than a series of disparate stages.
The display features approximately 144 works, many of which are drawn from a new temporary deposit by the Fundación Almine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso (FABA) and are exhibited in Spain for the first time. The galleries also incorporate five specialized 'Focus Exhibitions' curated by research scholars, providing in-depth explorations of key themes such as Picasso's engagement with African sculpture, his wartime experiences, and his large-scale mural commissions. This expansive approach highlights how the artist constantly redefined western artistic traditions, utilizing recurring themes like the Minotaur and the human figure to map a dynamic and interconnected vision of his creative journey.
