Guide to the Museo Picasso Málaga

The Buenavista Palace, which serves as the museum's primary building, was formally recognized as a National Monument in 1939. This historic 16th-century palace later housed a fine arts museum from 1961 until its acquisition for the current Picasso institution in 1997.

The concept of establishing a Picasso museum in the artist's birthplace was first seriously proposed in 1953 during the Franco era. Discussions involved the artist and the Provincial Delegate for Fine Arts in Málaga, with the Buenavista Palace identified as a potential location, though the project did not proceed at that time.

Following the 1996 commitment to create a major museum, a massive conversion project was initiated. Led by architect Richard Gluckman, the site was expanded to include adjacent houses and integrated modern infrastructure into the historical palace, incorporating complex solutions for climate control within the 450-year-old structure.

The Museo Picasso Málaga officially opened to the public on October 17, 2003. The opening ceremony was attended by the King and Queen of Spain, marking the realization of long-standing efforts to celebrate the artist in his birth city.

Upon opening, the museum featured a core collection of 155 works donated by Christine Ruiz-Picasso and her son, Bernard Ruiz-Picasso. This founding collection encompassed a diverse range of Picasso's artistic phases, including early academic studies, cubism, and late reworkings of Old Masters.

In 2009, the Fundación Paul, Christine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso merged with the Fundación Museo Picasso Málaga. This administrative unification formed the "Fundación Museo Picasso Málaga. Legado Paul, Christine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso," significantly expanding the managed collection available to the public.
