Visiting Museum der Moderne Salzburg Altstadt (Rupertinum)

The early baroque building housing the Rupertinum was originally constructed in 1653 by Archbishop Paris von Lodron. It was originally named Collegium Rupertinum and served as an educational facility for the priesthood and civil service.

The state of Salzburg acquired the building in 1976 specifically for the establishment of an institution initially known as the Moderne Galerie und Graphische Sammlung Rupertinum.

The Rupertinum opened in 1983 as the Stammhaus of the Museum der Moderne, housing the collection of art dealer Friedrich Welz and the Austrian Photo Gallery.

The Museum der Moderne – Rupertinum Betriebsgesellschaft mbH was established in 2003 to manage the institution as it expanded to a second location on the Mönchsberg.

The new museum building on the Mönchsberg, designed by the architects Friedrich, Hoff, and Zwink, was officially opened on October 23, 2004, to provide additional space for the museum's collections and contemporary exhibitions.

In January 2014, the extensive collection of the Generali Foundation was entrusted to the Museum der Moderne Salzburg as a permanent loan, significantly expanding the institution's holdings.

To accommodate its growing collection, the museum commissioned a modern, climate-controlled depot in Guggenthal, Koppl. The facility was completed in December 2017 after 10 months of construction.
