Salzburg Zoo Hellbrunn Announces Official Opening of Southeast Asia Animal Community and New Visitor Features
Salzburg Zoo Hellbrunn is expanding its grounds with significant new developments designed to enhance both animal habitats and the visitor experience. Nestled against the backdrop of Hellbrunn Mountain, the conservation-focused zoo has outlined major project milestones, headlined by the upcoming debut of a dedicated regional habitat and a new walk-through primate area.
What to Expect at the New Southeast Asia Shared Enclosure
Positioned in the northern section of the grounds—specifically located between the Alpine ibex enclosure and the brown bear habitat—a brand-new shared enclosure brings together a diverse community of Southeast Asian species. Visitors can plan to see this major new addition when it officially opens on 7 July 2026.
This multi-species habitat reflects the institution's ongoing commitment to geographically themed environments, allowing different animals to share a carefully designed living space that mirrors aspects of their natural ecosystems.
Upcoming Walk-Through Lemur Enclosure and Family Additions
Beyond the Southeast Asia project, construction activity is progressing across other parts of the grounds. A brand-new, walk-through lemur enclosure is currently being built within the bird park area. Once completed, guests will be able to journey into the habitat via an elevated wooden walkway stretching approximately 100 metres, complemented by a suspension bridge designed to offer a fresh perspective on the surroundings.
While construction is underway, the park's sitatungas and pelicans have been temporarily relocated to a separate enclosure. Families visiting the grounds can also explore a newly installed climbing and balancing play area, situated opposite the main playground between the maned wolf enclosure and the budgerigar aviary.
