Earthsongs showcases an expansive new body of work by the pioneer of abstract painting, Joan Snyder. Created over the course of a year, these paintings and works on paper extend motifs from the artist's six-decade career, blending ethereal compositions with visceral, earth-bound textures. The works are deeply rooted in Snyder's long-standing exploration of the 'Field' painting series, which investigates the intersection of agricultural landscape, personal history, and cyclical rebirth. Snyder’s practice is defined by a dense, collaged materiality, using unconventional elements such as mud, straw, dried flowers, and fabric alongside traditional oil and acrylic. These works function as a 'feminine vernacular' of abstraction, reflecting the artist's long history as a defining figure in the women’s art movement. By layering these diverse media, Snyder creates a diary-like record of the lived body, weaving together themes of mortality, beauty, and memory into complex, multi-layered visual hymns.
