Curatorial context

In celebration of its 250th anniversary, the Albertina Museum presents 'OTTO MEETS ALBERTINA', the first exhibition dedicated to the women artists within its collection. The exhibition aims to rewrite art history by revealing the decisive impact women have had on its development, despite their contributions often remaining invisible or forgotten. Spanning from the 15th century to the 1970s, the display includes numerous works by female draughtswomen and printmakers acquired by Duke Albert and Archduchess Marie Christine, alongside pieces from medieval woodcuts produced at women’s convents and early feminist works. This exhibition draws upon an ongoing research project initiated by the ALBERTINA Museum’s new Director General Ralph Gleis, concerning women artists across all collection areas. The findings reveal an astounding diversity and a considerable number of outstanding works that have been shown rarely or not at all, underscoring the historical presence and importance of female artists.
