Exhibition summary
The Ernst Fuchs Museum is located in a historic Otto Wagner villa, renovated by the artist Ernst Fuchs to display his paintings, sculptures, and furniture. Originally built in the late 19th century, the villa has a rich history and now serves as a showcase for Fuchs's 'Phantastic Realism' style.
Curatorial context
The Ernst Fuchs Museum is situated in a grand villa constructed between 1886 and 1888 by Otto Wagner for himself and his wife Louise. This Art Nouveau jewel, once a renowned venue for its opulent parties and gatherings of notable artists like Gustav Klimt and Adolf Loos, has a complex history, including expropriation during the Nazi era and periods of decline. In the early 1970s, artist Ernst Fuchs, a leading figure of Vienna's Phantastic Realists, took over the property. He spent two years renovating and rebuilding it, partly preserving its original character and partly according to his own vision. Today, the villa serves as a museum displaying Fuchs's paintings, sculptures, and furniture, offering visitors a glimpse into both architectural history and a unique artistic legacy.
