Curatorial context
The Clock Museum in Vienna's city center boasts Austria’s largest collection of clocks, with an impressive 7,000 exhibits including pocket watches, pendulum clocks, and numerous other historical timepieces. Spread across three floors, over 700 selected items narrate the history of timekeeping from the Middle Ages to the recent past. The oldest pieces date back to the 15th century, while highlights include a 17th-century tower clock from St. Stephen's Cathedral, iconic Viennese Biedermeier "Laterndluhren," the pocket watch collection of writer Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach, and an astronomical art clock capable of indicating planetary orbits and eclipses.
Beyond its focus on scientific progress and technical precision, the Clock Museum also documents the history of arts and crafts and illuminates numerous social changes. Founded in 1917, the museum's collection is largely built upon two private collections: that of Rudolf Kaftan, a secondary school teacher and the museum's first director, and the valuable collection of Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach. For a more interactive experience, the "AR Escape Game" offers a scavenger hunt titled "A secret shared," leading visitors through twelve stations to solve a mystery using tablets.
