Curatorial context
The Wien Museum on Karlsplatz has undergone a significant renovation and expansion, reopening in late 2023 to present the history of Vienna in a completely new way. This ultra-modern museum building, originally designed by Oswald Haerdtl and opened in 1959, has been modernized with a new upper floor housing temporary exhibitions and an expanded usable space. The newly designed permanent presentation, "Vienna. My History," spans three floors and 3,300 square meters, featuring 1,700 objects that offer exciting insights into the city's past from the Neolithic Age to the present day. Notably, it is the first permanent exhibition in Vienna to be open to the public free of charge, a pioneering approach for Austrian public museums. The museum houses a unique collection of outstanding works of art and historical exhibits, including high-profile pieces from the 19th and early 20th centuries, such as paintings by Gustav Klimt (including the portrait of Emilie Flöge and Pallas Athene) and Egon Schiele. Larger exhibits displayed in the central hall include the mascot "Poldi" (a whale sculpture), a mayoral carriage, a model of St. Stephen's Cathedral, and original sculptures from the Donnerbrunnen fountain.
Admission and ticket notes
The permanent exhibition "Vienna. My History" is accessible free of charge for all visitors. Free admission is also available for special exhibitions on the upper floor for all under 19 and every first Sunday of the month. Tickets for special exhibitions can be purchased online and on-site, with standard prices of 12€ or 8€ and reduced prices of 10€ or 6€, depending on the exhibition. A Vienna City Card offers a 25% discount on special exhibitions.
