Curatorial context

The Jewish Museum Vienna presents 'The Escape Room: Secrets of a Hidden Space' in its Project Space, featuring a filmic documentation of a hidden sanctuary created by Holocaust survivor Emmerich Grünwald. The exhibition delves into the psychological impact of persecution and internment, focusing on Grünwald's personal space built after his return from Theresienstadt. Emmerich Grünwald, a radio technician who survived the Theresienstadt Ghetto, built this 'escape room' in Vienna after being restituted his stolen store. Accessible via a hidden staircase, the room contained a kitchen, radio, and music equipment, serving as a private refuge from the traumas he endured. Although Grünwald tragically committed suicide in the space, its significance led the Jewish Museum Vienna and the Documentation Center of Austrian Resistance to document it before its demolition. The exhibition uses interviews and this documentation to search for traces of a generation unable to forget the horrors of the Nazi regime.
