Exhibition summary

This exhibition at the Josephinum explores the significant contributions to the academization of surgery in Austria, focusing on the development of artificial hearts in Vienna. It highlights the internationally pioneering research from 1967 onwards, which became a 'bridge to survival'.

Curatorial context

Founded in 1785 by Joseph II as an academy for military surgery, the Josephinum has a rich history of supporting surgical advancements. This exhibition delves into the development of the artificial heart, a project initiated in 1967 at the General Hospital of the City of Vienna by physicians and technicians from the Medical Faculty and later the Medical University. Supported by the Ludwig Boltzmann Gesellschaft, the Viennese artificial heart program evolved into one of Europe's largest, making Vienna a crucial center for the development and testing of heart support pumps. Today, rotation pumps, largely based on technology developed in Vienna, are used worldwide. The exhibition, presented for the first time at the Josephinum, showcases this internationally pioneering research achievement, termed a 'bridge to survival'. It combines descriptions of the scientists' accomplishments and presentations of remarkable artificial hearts from the AKH with objects from the Josephinum’s own medical history collections. As part of the exhibition and the 'Chiasmata' series, interventions from five contemporary artists dealing with the heart are also featured.
