Curatorial context

Vienna's photography scene is highlighted by the WestLicht Gallery, located in a loft-like courtyard of a former glass factory. Founded in 2001, WestLicht hosts around six temporary exhibitions annually, offering a broad overview of the medium. It also functions as a camera museum, displaying historically and technically significant devices, including the world's first commercially produced camera and unique items like KGB spy cameras and cameras used in the Apollo moon mission. A yearly highlight is the "World Press Photo" exhibition, showcasing winning photographs each autumn. The OstLicht gallery, opened in 2012 within the former Ankerbrot factory, complements WestLicht by focusing on contemporary photographic art. Occupying 400 m² of historic industrial architecture, OstLicht features temporary group and solo exhibitions by both Austrian and international artists, providing a distinct contrast to WestLicht's historical focus.

Standard ticket price is 12€, with a 3€ saving available with the Vienna City Card. Booking is recommended via their website. WestLicht has specific opening times from Tuesday to Sunday, with extended hours on Thursdays. OstLicht has different opening hours from Wednesday to Saturday.
