Curatorial context

OstLicht Gallery for Photography presents 'TOO REAL TO BE TRUE,' an exhibition uniting three extraordinary photographic positions that cast the everyday in a bizarre light. Martin Parr, Reiner Riedler, and Piero Percoco capture realities so intense they shock, fascinate, and touch viewers, while appearing strangely unreal. Martin Parr's series 'Cakes & Balls,' created in Vienna, offers a tongue-in-cheek look at the city’s coffeehouse and festive culture, exaggerating opulent cakes and rituals to reveal the fine line between splendor and kitsch. Reiner Riedler's ongoing series 'This Side of Paradise' delves into Austrian places of pleasure and dreams of freedom, imbued with a melancholy undertone that suggests an unfulfilled longing. Italian photographer Piero Percoco turns his lens on the small, intimate moments of everyday Italian life, capturing fleeting beauty with garish colors, and presenting them with directness, playfulness, and empathy. Together, these works form an exhibition about the real within the absurd, and the absurdity of the real itself.
