Curatorial context

The Gedenkstätte Gestapo-Anhaltelager Karajangasse, located at Karajangasse 14 in Vienna's 20th district, was re-established in 1999 within the Brigittenauer Gymnasium. The memorial site hosts two permanent exhibitions: one by students of the Gymnasium titled "Als Schulen zu Gefängnissen wurden" (When Schools Became Prisons), and another titled "Die verlorene Insel" (The Lost Island), created by Aktionsradius Augarten, focusing on the history of the local Jewish community. These exhibitions commemorate the numerous Jewish individuals and political opponents of National Socialism who were interned at the Gestapo detention camp in the school in 1938 before being deported to the Dachau concentration camp. The site also documents the outcomes of a school project that investigated the fates of 24 students expelled by the NS regime who were subsequently murdered. In recent years, the memorial site has been enhanced through a "Sparkling Science" project, aiming to reflect a more diverse student population. A memorial plaque on the facade of the Brigittenauer Gymnasium provides key information about the Gedenkstätte, including its location and opening hours: Thursdays from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM (only on school days), with access to the basement exhibition space via a glass door.

Admission and ticket notes

The Gedenkstätte is open on Thursdays from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, exclusively on school days. Visitors can access the exhibition space located in the basement of the school through a glass door. Specific ticketing information beyond these hours is not provided on this page.
