Holy Trinity Church, Micklegate

The institution was established in 1089 as Micklegate Priory by Ralph Paynel. It was dedicated to the Holy Trinity and placed under the care of the Benedictine Abbey of Marmoutier, occupying a site previously used for Christ Church, a house of secular canons.

While the church building dates from the 12th century with subsequent modifications in the 13th and 14th centuries, the tower was specifically constructed in 1453.

The south aisle was rebuilt during a major restoration project conducted by JB and W Atkinson of York. This work included re-pewing the main body of the church and adding a new aisle 10 feet wide and 60 feet long by opening the original arcades.

Architects Fisher and Hepper led the project to rebuild the chancel and vestry. The new chancel measured 38 feet in length and 23 feet in width, and the renovation included the addition of a new vestry and an organ chamber.

The west front of the church was reconstructed under the direction of architect Charles Hodgson Fowler between 1902 and 1905.

The church experienced administrative consolidation with other local parishes in the 20th century. It was united with St John's Church, Micklegate, in 1934, and subsequently with St Martin-cum-Gregory in 1953.
