Experience the Historic Kirkgate Victorian Street Exhibition at York Castle Museum

Kirkgate is a meticulously recreated Victorian street that serves as an iconic, permanent centerpiece of the York Castle Museum. First established in 1938 and restored in 2012, this indoor exhibit transports visitors back to the late 19th century through a series of shops and spaces based on real businesses that operated in York between 1870 and 1901.

Kirkgate is one of the world's oldest recreated indoor streets and the first of its kind to be opened in Britain. Originally conceived by the museum's founder, Dr. John Lamplugh Kirk, to evoke a sense of time travel, the exhibit underwent a major restoration in 2012. This project refined the historical focus to the 1870-1901 period, ensuring that every shop and business represented is based on a genuine historic commercial establishment from York's past. Visitors can explore a variety of businesses ranging from printers and drapers to gunsmiths, grocers, and pharmaceutical chemists, offering a unique opportunity to compare Victorian retail and craftsmanship with modern life. The exhibit also includes 'Rowntree Snicket,' an alleyway designed to portray the reality of poverty in Victorian York, inspired by Seebohm Rowntree’s groundbreaking 1901 sociological study on the city's poor. Together, these elements provide an immersive, research-led look at both the prosperity and the challenges of the Victorian era.
