Discover the Van Gogh, Hodler, and a Cabriolet Exhibition in Basel

This exhibition is the first extensive retrospective dedicated to the life and collection of the Swiss art pioneer Gertrud Dübi-Müller. It showcases eighty works by renowned artists including Vincent van Gogh and Ferdinand Hodler, alongside personal photographs and documents that highlight her roles as a collector, photographer, and adventurer.

The Kunstmuseum Basel presents an extensive exhibition dedicated to Gertrud Dübi-Müller (1888–1980), a prominent Swiss art collector, photographer, mountaineer, and pioneering driver. Featuring around eighty works by international figures such as Paul Cezanne, Vincent van Gogh, and Gustav Klimt, as well as eminent Swiss artists like Cuno Amiet and Ferdinand Hodler, the exhibition explores her influential role in the cultural landscape of the early 20th century. Visitors can trace her development from her early painting lessons with Cuno Amiet to the growth of her singular collection, which began with the acquisition of van Gogh’s 'Portrait of Charles-Elzéard Trabuc'. Beyond the art, the exhibition highlights Dübi-Müller’s remarkable independence through personal materials, including previously unpublished letters, postcards, and photographs from her travels across Europe and North Africa. These archival records reveal her deep friendships with the artists she supported, most notably Ferdinand Hodler, who immortalized her in multiple portraits. The display also celebrates her adventurous spirit, documented through her experiences as a mountaineer and her travels in one of the first Pic-Pic automobiles, offering an intimate look at a woman who helped define the modern era of art collecting.
