Celestial, Terrestrial, Animalic: A Historical Christmas Exhibition at Toy Worlds Museum Basel

This Christmas exhibition features over 600 animal-shaped ornaments that historically decorated holiday trees. The collection highlights the diverse craftsmanship of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including Dresden cardboard, Gablonz glass, and Victorian candy containers.

The exhibition 'Celestial, Terrestrial, Animalic' presents a vast collection of animal-themed Christmas decorations, showcasing the variety of creatures that adorned holiday trees roughly a century ago. Featuring more than 600 individual pieces, the display provides a glimpse into the diverse array of techniques utilized by the early Christmas tree decoration industry. Works range from delicate animals made of Dresden cardboard to intricate Gablonz ornaments, Victorian-era candy containers, and fine glass-blown objects. Many of these pieces date from the period between 1880 and 1930, sourced from the museum’s own holdings as well as loans from collectors Alfred Dünnenberger, Peter Baumann, and Doris Albrecht Mäder. The inclusion of these animals often referenced Christian faith, serving as a modern echo of the medieval 'bestiary'—books that linked animal characteristics to the doctrine of salvation. In addition to the historical survey, the exhibition offers an engaging experience for younger visitors through the story of 'Filou the Christmas dog,' whose narrative journey through the exhibition provides a whimsical guide to the animal ornaments. By combining historical craftsmanship with cultural interpretation, the exhibition highlights the significance of these often overlooked holiday traditions.

Entry to the exhibition is included with standard museum admission. Adults pay 7 CHF, while seniors and persons with disabilities are eligible for a discounted entry of 5 CHF. Children and youth up to 16 years of age enjoy free admission, with those under 12 required to be accompanied by an adult.
