Denim Exhibition at Toy Worlds Museum Basel Explores Fashion and Art History

This exhibition explores the versatile history and global cultural impact of denim, tracing its evolution from durable workwear to a ubiquitous fashion staple and contemporary art medium. Featuring approximately 125 objects, the display includes historical garments, furniture, everyday items, and artistic installations by international creators.

Denim has transcended its origins as a sturdy material for work trousers to become one of the most widely used and recognizable fabrics in the world. This exhibition examines the captivating history behind blue jeans, investigating the long-standing debate over whether the fabric originated from the French city of Nîmes or the Italian city of Genoa. Through a collection of approximately 125 objects, visitors can trace the material's evolution from its utilitarian roots worn by gold miners and cowboys to its current status as a fashion icon favored by heads of state and celebrities alike. Beyond clothing, the exhibition highlights the artistic potential of denim, showcasing works that demonstrate its adaptability as a material in its own right. Highlights include paintings by The Master of the Blue Jeans from the late 17th century alongside contemporary installations such as Ian Berry's 'The Secret Garden' and sculptures by Afran. Created in collaboration with Liza Snook from the Virtual Shoe Museum in The Hague, the exhibition brings together significant loans from European museums and private collections, providing a unique perspective on the intersection of textile history, fashion, and art.
