Exhibition summary

This exhibition showcases rare mechanical showpieces from the world-renowned Steiff company, including elaborate historical window displays. Visitors can admire moving animal dioramas, intricate felt dolls, and iconic toys that have captivated generations since the early 20th century.

Curatorial context

Moving World highlights the extraordinary mechanical craftsmanship of the Margarete Steiff GmbH, featuring impressive showpieces originally designed for advertising purposes. Among the highlights is the 'Weekend in the Animal Kingdom,' a 1928 creation featuring 47 animals enjoying a spa day, housed in a structure inspired by the Bauhaus movement. These pieces represent a unique slice of history, reflecting both technological ambition and the playful spirit that defined mid-century retail displays. The exhibition also features the expansive 'Mill in the Valley' diorama, created in 1926 by artist Albert Schlopsnies. This piece displays over 70 original felt dolls in a detailed rural setting, which was famously showcased at the 1933 World’s Fair in Chicago. Alongside these large-scale mechanical displays, the collection includes 13 smaller moving showpieces and notable oversized figures like a 1.5-meter tall Teddy baby, offering an immersive look at the evolution of Steiff’s doll art and toy manufacturing history.
