As the daughter-in-law of Pablo Picasso and mother of Bernard Ruiz-Picasso—the current president of the museum's Executive Council—her vision and generosity fundamentally transformed the cultural landscape of Malaga.
The Visionary Behind Malaga's Picasso Museum
Pablo Picasso long harbored a dream of establishing a museum in the city of his birth. While initial discussions began in 1953, the project was shelved for decades. It was Christine Ruiz-Picasso who revived this ambition in the 1990s, following the immense local enthusiasm for exhibitions held at Malaga's Episcopal Palace.
Her determination, alongside her son Bernard, culminated in a historic donation of 233 works of art. This extraordinary gift formed the core collection of the Museo Picasso Málaga, which officially opened its doors in October 2003. To house the collection, the Regional Government of Andalusia acquired the historic Buenavista Palace in 1997, merging Renaissance architecture with the artist’s groundbreaking modern works.
