Museo de Málaga

Following a Royal Decree on 24 July 1913, the Museo Provincial de Bellas Artes was officially founded on 3 February 1915 to serve as a provincial fine arts repository in Málaga.

After its founding, the Museo Provincial de Bellas Artes opened its doors to the public on 17 August 1916 in a temporary location on Calle Pedro de Toledo.

In 1920, the Museo Provincial de Bellas Artes moved to the former Jesuit college of San Sebastián, a site that also accommodated the local Fine Arts Academy and a specialized school.

The Archeological section originated from a 1947 government decree, which consolidated historical holdings from the old Museo Loringiano and archeological findings discovered throughout the province since the 1930s.

The Archeological section opened to the public in 1949, situated within the Alcazaba of Málaga, where many of its collection pieces had been excavated.

In 1961, the Museo Provincial de Bellas Artes relocated to the historic Buenavista Palace, remaining there for over three decades.

The current institution, Museo de Málaga, was formally formed in 1973 by merging the existing Museo Provincial de Bellas Artes and the Museo Arqueológico Provincial.

In 1996, the rehabilitation of the Alcazaba required the archeological collection to move; it was temporarily housed at the Convento de la Trinidad before transferring to its final site at the Avenida de Europa in 1999.

Following the purchase of the Buenavista Palace for the Museo Picasso Málaga in 1997, the Fine Arts section was relocated to the Palacio de la Aduana.

The unified museum opened in its current consolidated facility in December 2016, becoming the largest museum in Andalusia and the fifth largest in Spain.
