Curatorial context

The Jan Palach Memorial, housed in the former village home of the Palach family in Všetaty, offers a profound look into the life and actions of Jan Palach. The memorial was created following an architectural competition, resulting in a project that sensitively integrates Palach's legacy into the local area and addresses the historical significance of his childhood home. The historical exhibition at the memorial focuses on Jan Palach's life and his pivotal protest on January 16, 1969, a defiant act intended to awaken public consciousness amidst societal resignation following the August occupation. Visitors can engage with authentic artifacts and interactive screens that display contemporary visual and sound recordings, providing insight into Palach's family environment and other aspects of his life leading up to his protest. The exhibition also delves into societal and governmental reactions to his act, spanning the normalization period and continuing through to post-1989 reflections. Key artifacts, such as the national flag that covered his body and a death mask by sculptor Olbram Zoubek, are displayed, alongside a specially commissioned documentary by director Olga Sommerová.
