Exhibition summary

This historical account details Alphonse Mucha's early artistic struggles and his figurative return to the Klementinum in 1919. It highlights a significant exhibition where a part of his 'Slav Epic' was first displayed to the public in the summer refectory.

Curatorial context

The eastern wing of the Klementinum was home to the Academy of Fine Arts from 1799 to 1886. It was within this historical context that a young Alphonse Mucha applied to study at the academy in 1878, only to be rejected twice by professors who doubted his prospects. Mucha's connection to the Klementinum evolved significantly by 1919, when he returned figuratively as a world-renowned artist. An exhibition was held in the summer refectory, which offered visitors their first opportunity to see portions of 'The Slav Epic'. Five finished paintings were exhibited, including 'The Celebration of Svantovit in Rujana,' 'The Abolition of Serfdom in Russia,' and the 'Hussite Triptych: The Divination of the Word.' The space of the former summer refectory now serves as the General Study Room of the National Library of the Czech Republic.
