From the Shadows to the Light: Preserving Rare Hebrew Prints and Jewish Heritage

This exhibition showcases a selection of nearly 700 rare Hebrew prints from the collection of the National Library of the Czech Republic that were confiscated by the Nazis during the Second World War. From the Shadows to the Light delves into the complex history of a significant collection of nearly 700 Hebrew prints housed within the National Library of the Czech Republic. These volumes possess harrowing pasts, having been confiscated by the Nazis from Jewish communities and institutions throughout Europe during the Second World War. Following the conflict, they were transported to the region and remained largely forgotten for several decades, marking them as artifacts of a lost cultural legacy. Today, a dedicated team of Czech historians specializing in the recovery of confiscated Jewish property has successfully identified and cataloged many of these individual prints, tracing their origins to cities including Olomouc, Munich, Vienna, and Budapest. The exhibition serves as both a memorial and an educational endeavor, guiding visitors through the challenges of historical research and provenance. Beyond the individual stories of the books, the display provides an in-depth look at pre-war Jewish book culture, traditional Hebrew printing techniques, and the broader publishing history of the era.
